More than €110k raised in charity challenge

Sciencesoft has supported the Malta-based children’s charity The Ladybird Foundation in 2012 and 2013.

Participants in the successful Nivea 5x5 challenge for The Ladybird Foundation.

The Ladybird Foundation was set up to provide joy and relief to terminally, critically or seriously ill children based in the Maltese islands.

Funds collected will be used to give these children and their families the opportunity (sometimes the last opportunity) to go on vacation together or otherwise spend quality time with each other.

This year we helped by sponsoring the charity’s Nivea 5 x 5 Challenge which saw different teams participate in various sports last weekend.

According to the organisers this was a great success as funds raised reached over the €110,000 mark with more donations still coming in.

Originally the challenge was to be held on Sunday, September 22, with all disciplines ending at 1pm at the Radisson Blu Hotel in St. Julians.

However due to adverse weather conditions the two sea related events started 24 hours earlier to avoid the prevalent strong north easterly winds that were predicted and considered a hazard for the participants in question.

The 5 kayakers left at 5:00 am on the 21st September and paddled for 15 hours covering a distance of 75km around Malta. The 5 swimmers swam for 6 hours covering a distance of 16km (1km more than originally intended) from Mellieha Bay in the north of Malta to St. Julians.

Despite the heat, overnight drenching and overall fatigue, the other 14 participants managed to complete their respective challenges the following day in good time with no casualties whatsoever.

Each group consisted of 5 participants (except for the running team, as one person dropped out several weeks before the event). The events included an ultra-marathon run of 51km, a group of over 65′s completing a 45.5km trek in the Maltese countryside and public roads and 5 other men cycling for 175km completing several loops around our tiny island. The participation of kids was also encouraged and a 1km children’s fun run was planned for the running team, whilst a 5km route was planned for the kid’s cycling event.

An after-event party was held at the Radisson Blu St. Julians for the participants, family members and support teams.

We send our congratulations to all those who participated in this fundraising event.
