Sciencesoft Internship – July 2015
Sciencesoft have run a successful paid Internship Programme for over 10 years, giving students the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of work at Sciencesoft.
The programme lasts 3 months over the summer period and is open to students studying science-based subjects. Since producing outstanding software requires adept team work, other generic skills we look for as well as strong problem solving skills are good communication skills.
A good internship will guide and advise students on actual working pressures and issues, preparing them for their post-graduation careers. Our Internship provides a good overview and practical detail on how our acclaimed software is built, maintained and sold into a highly competitive, global market.
Sciencesoft interns have gone on, to our great pleasure, to become permanent employees. From the 2012 programme, Sam Murdoch joined and continues to work with us. Scott Richardson from the 2014 programme is about to start full-time. Our current intern, Cameron Guthrie, is studying on the MEng Computer Science degree at Strathclyde University.
Sam Murdoch, talking on his internship experience
“As an intern I got to work on a mix of projects. This included researching graphics technology and also implementing production code for a new product. I was able to develop key skills and enhance what I had learned at university by working with experienced staff in a number of areas. The internship exposed me to state-of-the-art development environments, languages and new technology, and I was encouraged to apply these to real situations. Being a smaller company, the internship also meant that along with the technical aspects, I could learn about the close working culture in which Sciencesoft operate. Along with being able to present my findings at the conclusion of the internship, this meant I developed good working relationships with the majority of staff. This meant the transition into becoming a full-time employee was much easier.”
“Now a full time employee, I am involved with the full product development cycle for all Sciencesoft products, including testing, design and development. I have had the opportunity to go abroad and attend international oil and gas shows. I have also been given time to take part in extra-curricular activities, such as leading a school team in the Go4SET programme.”
“I would say how the really good working atmosphere, as well as all the reasons above, makes the proposition of working at Sciencesoft an enjoyable one!”
